WHY I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY
iMac G5
Why did you buy it?
I was originally a Mac fan, but I used a PC for three years to animate in 3D Studio Max. Recently I was working on illustrations for a new children's book and I realised that I was spending a lot of my time troubleshooting problems instead of illustrating. Windows was just freaking me out. On the same day that I lost five hours work because my PC crashed, I went to the Apple Store on Regents Street and bought an iMac G5. I haven't looked back.
What does it do for you?
The Mac is good for graphic design work -- it stays out of my way while I get on with illustrating. The 20-inch screen is gorgeous. Perhaps I shouldn't admit this, but when I first got my iMac I spent about half an hour just staring at it and smiling. I've used a lot of LCDs -- I used to work as a colour engineer for Kodak. The screens Apple are loading into their new Macs are perfect for illustration work, everything looks very close to how it will in print.
Would you recommend it to others? Why?
Definitely. The G5 flys through most of the Photoshop work I do. The all-in-one design of the iMac is ideal for my desk because it frees up so much space for me to get down to some old fashioned analogue sketching on bits of paper. Apple have a reputation for quality and I can see why. Everything just works; the iMac is a powerful tool that doesn't hassle me to fix things.Name
