WHY I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY
Canon XM2 camcorder
Why did you buy it?
I can't use a domestic camcorder for my work, as it doesn't have the same presence, but I didn't need the sophistication of the XL2, so I went for its little brother.
What does it do for you?
It's an extremely good camcorder and is extremely versatile. The XL2 is the indie filmmaker's camcorder of choice. But the XM2 costs half the price and is great value. I use it to film video podcasts for Thames Valley Pod TV. I don't need to make the podcasts broadcast quality -- I compress them using MPEG-4, which is the standard for the video iPod. The lens of the XM2 is very good and I like that I don't have to use the attached mic in the camcorder -- I can plug in a condenser mic.
Would you recommend it to others? Why?
If you're doing a lot of video work, yes, but not if you're only using it to take videos on holiday. The XM2 is good for serious amateurs or professionals who want a handy quick camera to use.

If you could design and create your ultimate product, what would it be?
I wish I'd designed the iPod -- it's an example of great product design.
What tech insider secret do you find most useful?
I've created a music network at home using iTunes and Airport Express. This means I can play music on either the hi-fi in the lounge or the hi-fi in my bedroom -- or both at the same time!
