WHY I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY
P&S Technik Skater Mini
Why did you buy it?
Sometimes you're in such small spaces that you wouldn't be able to get a standard dolly in. And sometimes we don't have the time to use a dolly when filming -- you need to lay a track, which takes hours. The Skater isn't a replacement for a dolly, but it's a great supplement.
What does it do for you?
It's an amazing piece of kit that has got us out of jail on a lot of occasions -- when we're filming in small spaces, or for speed reasons. It's wonderfully smooth and controlled -- you can set the wheels to go in any direction.
Imagine I want to do a low shot on the floor. I could use a dolly, but it wouldn't be very close to the ground. It's quick to set the Skater up, and it's low. It's also handy for 'pack' shots where you're filming in a circle around a product. For these shots it's really important that, when you move the camera around, the product stays in the same place in the frame. There's a laser that comes with the Skater that lets you line up the wheels, so they're in the right position to move in a circle around the product.
Would you recommend it to others? Why?
Only for someone in the industry as it costs about £3,000. Also you'll need to work with it a lot to get used to it.
